I got this text of a lecture because its title seemed relevant to thoughts I was having about the features of plant species which combine to promote their survival. Huxley deals almost exclusively with animals, but his remarks are so general as to apply to plants as well. Writing before the development of the science of genetics, he does not get bogged down in details, but argues what must be from observations that such animals exist. His one plant observation shows that if a plant species produced fifty seeds a year, and they all grew, they would cover the entire land surface of the earth in nine years.Product details
